Lacrimosa is latin for “weeping” and also derives from the title: Our Lady of Sorrows. It is also in the title of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's “Requiem, K. 626: Lacrimosa”. This piece is a metaphor for the mourning of the past two years. A true juxtaposition of progression and regression, of judgement and imprudence, of happiness and sorrow, of birth and loss. This plays on the lyrics "Lacrimosa dies illa, Qua resurget ex favilla, Judicandus homo reus" which roughly means "that day of tears and mourning, when from the ashes shall arise, all humanity to be judged." Such sad words masked by the brilliant violins and choir. Similarly, such a sad face hidden behind delicacy and vibrancy. Both the painting and the requiem are divine, melancholic and horrifying but are simply done in such a beautiful way that the audience almost forgets it is supposed to be haunting.
Special thank you to the photographer, Lizzie Sweetie, and the model, Jillian Maraj, for allowing me and giving me the opportunity to bring their creation to life.
