My thesis work was driven by the desire to depict the lives of rural LGBTQ people using both fictional and autobiographical narratives. I reject metronormativity, the commonly reinforced idea that LGBTQ people can only exist, thrive, and be liberated in metropolitan places. These companion pieces were created to celebrate the comfort of finding safety and community in one another, while also emphasizing the pervasive isolation of existing in an unwelcome environment. It is my hope that this work will change the perspective others have about rural LGBTQ life as well as honor the resilience and bravery of those who are living as their authentic selves.
