Disequilibrium is a body of work that grew out of my struggles with vertigo which I have lived with for the past fifteen years. Vertigo is a sudden internal or external spinning sensation that obstructs your vision. Vertigo has directed my path in life in many ways and has dictated many choices for me. For this project I created a photographic freeze frame of the filmic loop that is a vertigo episode. The movement of the figure relates to the visual tracking of my eyes while the red is a symbol for the frustration and anger at being so debilitated. Working on Disequilibrium has been empowering as the photographic process has allowed me to gain a certain amount of control and mastery over this unwieldy and unpleasant condition.
